If you were driving down Boydton Plank Road, it would be easy to miss the site of Fort Gregg. The site is well-maintained, even if gently marked.

The earthworks are still there, testimonies to the desperate rear-guard fight that occurred on April 2, 1865.

On a quiet morning, a visitor might allow himself to imagine the events of that day; maybe even to pay respects to any ghosts that may still inhabit the place.

It's good to see Petersburg is finally getting its due - when I visited there in 1964 it was disappointing after some of the more "famous" battlefields like Gettysburg, Antietam, etc. to see how relatively little of it was marked or featured even though it was the Centennial of the siege.

I grew up in the area. For the longest time, all that was really marked was the main battlefield park that included the Crater, Battery #5 etc. It's only in the last 20+ years that the western theater actions are being focused on with signage and preservation
