The fort was established in 1854 and named after then Sec. of War, Jefferson Davis. It was one of the many forts along the San Antonio - El Paso road that protected travelers heading to California in search of gold and other riches. One of the first post CW commanders was Benjamin Grierson, who led that famous raid through Mississippi in 1863 in conjunction with Grant's move down the river and eventually Vicksburg. It was very very hot while we were there. Really hot.

I've never had the opportunity to visit the forts in west Texas or along the Rio Grande, so concentrated on the frontier line for my recent thread Texas Forts Trail. Maybe someday...

That is a great picture.

My grandfather was a truck driver for 55 years, and I was lucky enough to ride along with him when I was a kid. about 20 years ago, during my Thanksgiving break from school, we were on our was back from Colorado and we swung through Roswell, NM, stopping for dinner, then we stopped in Fort Davis, TX the next day at a tomato packing plant. I remember that it seemed like their was one road in, and one road out. Their was no where to get diesel fuel except for regular gas stations, and I had to teach my old grandpaw how to "pay at the pump" because the stations were closed for some reason.
We had tamales from an old Mexican lay in a food truck, and to this very day, they are the best tamales I've ever had.
I'd give me right arm for another road trip in the 18 wheeler with the old man. RIP Pawpaw!

Fort Davis was a beautiful place. It was definitely in the middle of no where.

So, I can say I've been to Fort Davis.
