Forrest's 12th Calvary

Welcome from the UK and from The First Bull Run/ Manassas Forum

Could you give us some information as to which 12th Cavalry you speak of? I guess you mean the 12th Tennessee Cavalry but Forrest had men from many States. That will save our researchers significant time.

Here is James Fold3 records but there is no John R just an R T

Welcome from the Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing Forum and North Mississippi! Forrest was very active at Shiloh while leading his merry band of men.

Located two more relatives on my gggmothers side that fought in Co.H 7th Tn. Calvary C.S.A.. Their names are W. Gleason Barger b. 1840 d. 1906 and J. W. Barger. They are both buried at Gardner Cemetary in Gardner Tn.

This is the service record for Cpl William G Barger of the 7th Tenn Cav. Looks like he was absent without leave for about 16 months and had his pay stopped, but he returned to duty and served till the surrender.
I had read somewhere that one of the Barger brothers had signed the oath of allegiance and the other one gave them the middle finger. Must have been J.W. Also read that they fought in Union City, Tn. and moved through Dresden Tn. and back to Ms. These areas are within a 10 mile radius of where I live. Thanks again for your help.

Great info/research Big Sarge !

I messed up in post #15. I was copying data from more than one unit/source and I transposed data. I'm sorry for any confusion this might have caused. This is a corrected version - the first dates seem out of sequence but it is due to the separate companies that were combined with the battalion later in 1862.

Looks like you got some great information, Alan! Welcome to the Ancestry forum. I second the suggestion about visiting the Forrest forum--you'll find a lot of good info about Forrest and his forces over there. :)

Seeking information on my gggfather Capt. James H. Hazlewood and his brother John R. Hazlewood. They both served with Forrest in the 12th. Found them listed in the roster of the 12th in the book "Coming Like Hell". Any information about my relatives would be greatly appreciated.

I have that book. It is about the 12th Tennessee Cavalry---CSA, of course.
James Hazlewood was a Captain of Company D. Here is a card that summarizes the officers of that company.

Hazzlewood_Capt.JPG

The "C" stands for Captain and the numbers are for 1st & 2nd Lieutenants. I think the column represent a change in the organization as officers were replaced, etc. It looks like Hazlewood was not the Captain of the company at some point in time. Maybe he was promoted to a staff officer.

I don't see his brother, John Hazlewood, listed in the NARA service records.

Can you clarify what type of information you are looking for. The book has a good history of that regiment. Too bad it doesn't have an Index so you could see if it mentions Captain Hazlewood in the text.
