I'm sitting here going through a few old forts and batteries I have on my list. I know this series isn't the most popular on the forum as not everyone cares about fortifications and engineering as much as others. I respect that.

But for those that do. I just wanted to ask all of you where or what you'd like me to focus on in the next few posts. I love to learn. Maybe its a local fortification or post you're interested in or just something you heard of. If you have ideas, throw em out. I'll research them.

A few ideas or fortifications:

West: California, Nevada, Arizona
Western Confederacy: Texas, Oklahoma
Mississippi River Region: Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee
Ohio River Region: Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio
Southeast: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina
East: North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Deleware
New England/Northeast: All states that way

If you are interested in any of the coastal forts - Atlantic, Gulf, Pacific - I'll be happy to help. I have histories and both current and period photographs as well as the plans of the forts. That's my thing!

Any evidence of a fort ever built anywhere named after Capt. "Francis" Dessauer?
He was KIA at Chancellorsville.
Maj. C.H. Howard (his tent-mate) wrote on 3 June, 1863 that he and maybe his brother (Gen. O.O. Howard) had planned it:
We (11th Corps) are building permanent fortifications. One will be named for Capt. Dessauer (aide de camp). If you ever write this be sure and make the name plain for it was given Dessous in the Press 6/3/1863 Headquarters Eleventh Corps Near Brooke Station Va From: To: before in my acct of the battle. Other forts will be named for Colonels killed in the last battle. Give my love to Lizzie & Hattie if you see them again - to Miss Frost & family & accept any amount to yourself. From your Aff. bro C.H. Howard P.S. How does the Prophecy come on? Maj. W's resignation not yet accepted. Otis not very well today - Diarrhea. I am well. P.S. Please send this to mother if convenient. C.H.H.

Was not able to find any such fortification by that name after a quick inspection. Might dive a little deeper later.

I'm pretty sure I have read most of, if not all the threads you have posted in this forum, and contributed when I had something I thought was helpful. I am always looking for new ideas for places to visit too. Keep up the good work.

Forts Delaware, Warren, and Alcatraz come immediately to mind. All three had dual roles, with prison being one of them. They still carried defensive capability and responsibility as well.
