Hi all,

would anyone mind looking up the records for Frederick Jenkins of the 26th Virginia Infantry? They are on Footnote.com - but wouldn't it figure, my account expired yesterday and I cannot afford to subscribe again right now. Knowing those records are on there but I can't get them is making me a little crazy. I really am just interested if anything out of the ordinary is documented (such as hospital stays or any captures - stuff like that). I would really appreciate it and be happy to return the favor when I reinstate my membership. :)

Here is an interesting one. Page 5.jpg

Hope you can read it. Bottom says he was absent, "detailed on naval brigade". You know what that might be about?

Hah! Oh my... might not be bragging about this connection! Thank you for helping me out with this :D

Eh, I have a gg-grandfather who deserted from the CSA, too, but I have to forgive him because my g-grandmother was born in 1864 as a result - if he hadn't, I wouldn't be here!

Actually, I'd forgive him for deserting the CSA anyway, but I know that attitude is controversial here.

Your ancestor's record says his role was 'waterman' and most of his assignments have to do with boats - probably something to pursue there.

Well a lot of Confederate soldiers deserted after reading heart-wrenching stories from home about the hardships happening without them there to help. I can understand that kind of desertion.

You really might want to look into this "naval brigade" thing. If he spent enough time around sailors he might have jumped on a ship as a blockade runner or something. There was money to be had.

My g-g grandfather also went AWOL for a while in 1864 from the ANV. But then again we know that happened to a lot of soliders during Petersburg. At some point he came back to the army in some form because he was paroled at Ashland in early April 1865.

I have not found anything that says my gg grandfather deserted, however, he got married in March of 1864. He was with the 58th AL, and apparently they had wintered at Dalton, GA. That's about 80-90 miles from where he would have lived. Maybe he got a furlough? He was present at Meridian, MS in May 1865 for their surrender.
