Food for book event

I am doing a book event with another author who writes in the same time period. We will have snacks/finger foods available but were pondering having period appropriate food too. One time we had a Civil War dinner at a book club and it was not so great. Is there anything from ACW time that would classify as finger food?

Ha. Found it searching "calf brain" because I remember complaining about that.

Also, here's a recipe for Shortbread that would be great finger food, thanks to @donna . I don't know how old this recipe is though. It's got the "Period" tag, so perhaps it is era-appropriate.

Thank, LoriAnn. You have given me some "food for thought." I do think I will pass on the oysters since I don't want to spend the evening scratching and wheezing.

For a finger food from the civil war Era you can serve pickled eggs,that's the quickest off the top of my head.

A couple of other things are lemon drops,peppermint drops,rock candy,and pickles.strange variety but it is from that era.

The sweet cakes and hot cakes section from the book @LoriAnn linked might be good choices. They aren't complicated to prepare (for the most part) and aren't unusual that folks won't want to eat them.

Also check Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management it's period correct and covers everything you could ever imagine from appetizers to main entrees to desserts.

I just realized I made a joke quite by accident. I didn't know "downer" was a term for certain livestock.
