Fold3 Membership

The CMSRs of all states are not yet digitized on fold3. I would strongly recommend buying a one month subscription, and then deciding whether an annual subscription is worth your while. It's possible you may not need more than a month or 2, if your search us well organized.
There are a huge number of military records (Civil War and all the rest of Americas military history) besides the records of individual soldiers (CMSRs) on Fold 3.
Far too many to list.

As far as CMRSs go
All the southern states including Union units are microfilmed and therefore are available on Fold3.com
Also the smaller (population wise) northern states.
The very populous northern states like New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio supplied such huge numbers of troops that NARA never got around to microfilming them. Thus not available on Fold3. To get access to soldiers' records from those states someone must get or make paper or digital copies. Copies can be ordered from NARA, but there can be a considerable wait for them. You can pay a researcher to copy them, or go to NARA yourself.

I do not have an exact list of which northern states are on Fold3 handy right now.
I'm sure someone will post them.

Thanks very much for the information. Almost sent in a subscription a few months ago as I have quite a number of relatives from Ohio, Illinois & Pennsylvania. You saved me some money that I can send to the National Archives instead!

You might try using Gopher Records. They charge less than NARA and typically you get your records faster than NARA.
They are on CWT or you can probably just google "Gopher Records"

These are the CMSR's Fold3 currently has available:

Confederate - Soldiers from units in all states, non-state Confederate units, Confederate Officers, Confederate Miscellaneous, Confederate citizens files, etc.

Union Records from States: California, Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont, West Virginia, Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Colorado, Dakotas, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Nebraska and District of Columbia

Union regiments formed in: Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida

USCT, 1st NY Engineers, and Naval Officers

It's important to know that CMSR's are collections of carded records filed by soldier. Rosters, rolls, logs, etc. were transcribed to "cards" (hence the name "carded records") and filed by soldier in the late 1800's and early 1900's to facilitate verification of service and pension processing. In many cases, they are not copies of the original document. For example Company Muster Rolls are just the transcribed info from the actual roll. If there's card for a hospital admission included - it's not the actual daily log or roster. Those entries were transcribed to individual cards and filed in the soldiers' CMSR, by name.

Thanks.
I knew you would have and share the information.

States without microfilmed CMSRs:

Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire
New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wisconsin

Did I leave any state(s) out or include any that do have microfilmed CMSRs?

Look for the thread "The Civil War "Soldiers and Sailors" system is no longer supported" to find Gopher Records
