Florida State monument at Chickamauga

[2nd Florida Hispanic]

Every time I drive back from Chattanooga to Orlando I try to stop at the Chickamauga Battlefield.

Due to my schedule I didn't have a lot of time so I stopped by my favorite history shop down the road, picked up a few books and miniatures and headed to the battlefield.

I wish I could have spent more time there. This time I only got to visit the visitors center, notice that the confederate flags that were for sale aren't there anymore and walk to the FL State monument that's super close to the center.

No matter how much time I have, every time I go to this battlefield I make sure to spend some time

We're mostly all Americans here. We have some Brits, Germans, French, Italians, Aussies and Kiwis, but we're all a group of Civil War junkies.

It is a great monument and as a Florida resident I have been there many times.

Very soon I too intend to be a resident of Florida.

I retire from the USPS in 5 more days and once we sell our home here in Columbus, Ohio, we'll be heading on down.

And the Mosquitos, gators, Anole lizards that seem to run across the sidewalk right as you're stepping, (these are fun to catch if you have grandkids. They won't hurt you) "Palmetto Bugs" that I think are just mutated huge roaches that we renamed to hide that fact. Umm.. I think that's about it that might make you think you've stepped into some prehistoric jungle. Oh. And 30 minutes of pouring rain every afternoon in the summer, lightning storms, sink holes, and the occasional hurricane.

A VERY cool thing is the diverse and unique people. The further South you go the more diverse the population becomes. Northern Florida feels almost the same as Southern Georgia to me.

Central Florida is very interesting in that cities can have a Northern feel but as soon as you get out of the cities Central Florida is still "The South." It's really nice to be able to experience both so easily.

South Florida can almost seem another country at times. I lived in Miami for many years and the people are likely to speak to you in Spanish first then switch to English if you don't understand. I loved Miami but when I had kids we moved back to Central Florida.

As a Floridan I can say it might be a bit of a culture shock at first. We have such a varied group of people from everywhere so in the bigger cities you can feel an international hint because there are so many people not originally from here. No one seems to have actually been born in Florida.

As far as having a lot of old people they must all be hiding somewhere unknown because there don't seem to be anymore of them here than in any other state I've lived in.

As crazy as it can be sometimes, I love this state. It's always been home no matter where else I might be living at the time.

I was born in Palatka and lived in Welaka for 7 years then Satsuma for a year then we moved to NJ. So I had a start in Central Florida anyway

Its a small world Poor , I lived in good old Putnam County ( Palatka) for 13 years before moving to North Carolina.

Do you have a better photo of the soldier statue inside the monument...? His slouch hat almost looks like a cowboy hat, but hard to tell...

Hah well my parents came close - didn't retire but they did move back from FL to NJ in their 50's. Technically they did retire to the South but it was about an hour and a half away in southern NJ

I would say it looks like he's holding an Enfield P53... no?

I don't know enough to be able to say which specific gun just by looking at it. All I know is that I wouldn't want him shooting it at me.
