Hi all,

I have been immensely interested in Florida's participation in the Civil War for years and I thought this was a good document to share with you all.

You might be familiar with the book "By the Noble Daring of Her Sons" by Jonathan Sheppard, which describes the service of the Florida regiments that fought in the Army of Tennessee (and it's predecessor armies). This is the dissertation that Mr. Sheppard wrote prior to writing the book.

It is an interesting examination of the Florida units in the Western theatre in 1861-1862.

I have an ancestor in the 6th Florida Infantry Regiment and I read that book a coupla years ago. Need to re-read it. I will check your link out. Thanks.

Indeed! And also an important contributor of salt to the Confederate economy.

Well I like Marvel more they have more diverse (not in the multicultural sense but background and team sense) heroes and settings to real life (aside from fictional ones) as well as having dynamic characters (big name or obscure name).

Well I could discuss this topic for ages, but I suspect we'd need another thread for that

I am a massive fan of both DC and Marvel, but certainly started out as very much a Marvel-guy. While I still prefer the Marvel universe overall, there is a lot of DC that I have grown to love: Watchmen, as an example, is phenomenal!

Ha! Marvel and America both had a civil war and at least one side wore blue and the other a different color: Red Ironmen vs Blue Captains, Union Blues vs Confederate Greys.

The Baby Boomers were the first generation to value comic books as adults. Also the first to wear gym shoes and short pants as adults. Also the first generation in which white collar workers wore blue collar work clothes. But with ties, which is weird. Well, maybe not; one can be casual but must still wear a marker of social status.

The Florida State Memorial is located outside of Vicksburg National Military Park on former park property in the City of Vicksburg. It is situated along south Confederate Avenue at the Mulvihill Street intersection. The memorial was constructed of Elberton Georgia Granite by the Atlantic Memorials of Jacksonville, FL and dedicated April 17, 1954. It stands in honor of the soldiers who served in General Joseph E. Johnston's army of relief.

The memorial was provided by the Florida United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.) at a cost of $5000. It consists of a upright granite monolith with a polished surface 4' x 3'8". The Florida State Seal is at the top, front, "In God we trust" along with the following words: "Whether sleeping in distant places, or graveless, this monument has been erected to the memory of the men who served the Confederate States of America."

Lets see.
There were the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th Florida Infantry Regiments and the 1st Cavalry Regiment and 3rd Cavalry Battalion which operated with the Army of Tennessee over its existance.
However, these units fought in seperate commands until after Chickamauga, when they were unified under the command of the promoted BG Jesse Finley.
Before that, 1st Florida had fought at Shiloh, before being joined by the 3rd and 4th Florida, along with a mix of tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina units, first under William Preston and then Marcus Stovall. The 6th and 7th Florida fought at Chickamauga under Col. Robert Trigg's brigade (Trigg of the 54th Virginia).
After they united, the brigade fought at Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign (where Finley was disabled and command of the brigade fell to Ltc. Mashburn and Col. Robert Bullock), and then the Franklin Nashville Campaign, where the brigade was cut to pieces. A consolidated remnant joined Joe Johnston in the Carolinas and fought at Bentonville before surrendering with the army there.

Man, I went through a lot of documents and tedious memoirs, etc. today that I feel like I am all that is Florida!!! Highest Percentage of state population sent to fight for the Confederate States - and monuments from east to west in case anyone forgets.

Sheppard) so badly, i just might have to get it as an early Christmas Gift for myself along with A Small but Spartan Band: The Florida Brigade in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia! Man, I went through a lot of documents and tedious memoirs, etc. today that I feel like I am all that is Florida!!! Highest Percentage of state population sent to fight for the Confederate States - and monuments from east to west in case anyone forgets.

Bought both of these books last year, were spectacular reads.
