War Service 1861 served in Missouri home guards, Camp Jackson, September 1862 Col. of 33rd Missouri, November 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded Districts in Missouri, opposed raids by Sterling Price, Marmaduke and Shelby.
Brevet Promotions Maj. Gen. U.S.V. March 13 1865.
Post War Career Assistant commissioner of Freedmen's Bureau, educator, served on Board of Indian Commissioners, politician, banker.
