Hello all:
I have two questions about the Fisher's Hill period, stemming from personal connections.
First of all, one of my extended family's members was a Pennsylvanian who went south and fought with the 6th Virginia Cavalry, CSA. He was killed, apparently, at a skirmish near Luray, VA on September 22nd, 1864. A brief record I found indicated that some of Sheridan's forces had advanced up the Luray Valley, which is parallel to the main valley and separated from it by Massanutten Mtn. But that's all I have found. I wonder if anyone has encountered any more detailed information on the skirmish at Luray.
Secondly, I've spent lots of time in nearby Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, the burning and looting of which was to some degree avenged by USA general William Averell, of Steuben County, New York, when he embarrassed McCausland's command at Moorefield later in 1864. Averell seems to have been a generally competent commander. Yet, according to Wikipedia (bear with me…), he was essentially fired by Sheridan after Fisher's Hill. No reason is provided on that site. And a site by the National Park Service offers no answer either. Has anyone encountered any information on Averell's supposed firing? Is this covered in any literature? It's been a few years since I've read anything on the '64 Valley campaign.
Thank you all.
