First time reenactor.....

Hey guys, I hate to interrupt. But I've often wondered: what was the soldier's responsibility for his weapon?

Somtimes they were stacked in a tepee formation, as we see at reenactments. Was this something that happened at certain times? I mean, when troops went into camp, did they just stack arms outside their tents? What if it rained?

What if their tents and baggage were not with them? Did they still stack arms or sleep with their weapons underneath a blanket?

Good point I almost forgot. The 1855 and 1862 (I believe) editions of Hardee's are different in some clear aspects.
Way to many groups just use the 1855 book, even when it was not used that much. Since both sides quickly replaced it with other books.

His revised book was first published in 1861.
(the intro say June 18th 1861, so it came out some time after that. It was copyrights in 1861)
The state of North caronlina made it their official manual, and actually spend money on printing it and issuing it to their regiments it in 1862.

The differences I can remember are how you do:
Load, fix bayonets, unfix bayonets and stack arms.

By early 62 I would argue that very very few regiments used his 1855 book.
(that is, the 1861 US infantry tactics was a word for word copy with another front page and into and the manual of arms for muskets added... so mostly a difference in name only)
