The Vicksburg Campaign consisted of many important naval operations, troop maneuvers, failed initiatives, and eleven distinct battles from December 26, 1862, at Chickasaw Bluffs until the surrender on July 4, 1863. Two Confederate Brigades containing men from East Tennessee commanded by Alexander W. Reynolds and John C. Vaughn were part of the Vicksburg Garrison. Reynolds's command included the 3rd, 31st, 43rd, and 59th Tennessee and 25 East Tennesseans helping man the seven guns of the 3rd Maryland Battery. The recently organized 60th (79th), 61st (81st), and 62nd (80th) Tennessee were part of Vaughn's Brigade.
According to Engineering Major James T. Hogan, who served under General Martin L. Smith, Vaughn's Division Commander, the first Confederate KIA was Captain Calvin A. Gurley, Co. H 62nd Tennessee from Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee where Vaughn was from and once served as Sherrif. Hogan said Vaughn told him, Gurley had crept between the lines at Chickasaw Bluffs to try and aid a wounded man and was killed.
