Field Trip Help!

I am a high school history teacher. We are planning to take a group of 35 teenagers to gettysburg in the spring for a field trip. The school district I work in has a lot of poverty. My goal is for each student to have to pay at least half the cost. The need skin in the game. But I need some ideas of how to help raise funds to off set the cost of the trip for each student. I have applied for a grant from the American Battlefield trust. But I was wondering if anyone on here could give me some ideas or information where I may apply for more grants. I teach at a small rural high school in NE Georgia

any amount to help offset the cost. Total for all 35 kids and 5 chaperones is around 18,000. 525 per kid

Oh yea, I know. I was reminded pretty forcefully when we toured the last time that killer Angels was fiction! lol. I would love to have seen more of ewell's attacks on the 1st day, East Cavalry field on the 3rd, and more of the Peach Orchard and Wheatfield on the 2nd

Fellow teacher here. I've never tried to get a grant to cover a field trip, but this might help.

I did apply for that one. It would be a personal milestone type accomplishment to get that one!

Killer Angels is a novel remember. Martin Sheen did an excellent job of the ficticeous General Lee from the book. That ain't History though. Not one scene of General Lee with the trots from eating too many cherries. HA! Seriously, KA is a novel no matter how well the book was portrayed. Much more than Little Round Top and Longstreet's Attack Upon The Union Left Center occured over those 3 days.

I can say this about the actors in Gettysburg. Sheen and Berringer did well with using a "southern" Accent, but Brickman made my skin crawl. Hes a good actor, but as a southern draw southerner myself, Big time Hoolywood folks trying to sound southern can be great acting skills, or cringeworthy noise! No in between

Can't argue with that. Stuart out running around gathering wagons and shelling Carlisle Barracks would have been great also put they were also, alas, not in the book. But they are at the park! I'm sure kids will want to see what was in the film. Its only natural.
Fort Tej'on in Cali had an overnight program where the kids become little 1850s Dragoons. I think those programs are cool also.

I looked him up. He is exactly who I thought you were referring to. He stands out especially because he was so bad and one screen so much and were his cap like a ball cap. Nobody on set helped those actors with how to wear the clothing and hats. Reenactors helped a lot except the gigantic ones who would have had heart failure on even a short march. General Heth came off as a high school play with this accent as well.

I would reach out to reenactment groups and see if they'd be able to have a living history weekend at the school, food trucks ect. And ask for donations have your band play a Pickett charge 5k

I only see two Round Tables in South Carolina, Charleston and Low Country, which are probably in the wrong part of South Carolina to be of help to you. I recognize some places in North Carolina that are too far east to be of help to you, but I'm not familiar with all of them.

Just wondering why your school would accept private donations via cheque, but not allow a GoFundMe.

The issue for me is that I'm in Canada, so would have to get a cheque in US funds from my bank and then send it through Canada Post and USPS. I did that once to support a band trip for my great nephew just across the border in Washington State and it never got there.

On the other hand I have donated to at least 3 fund raisers in the US through GoFundMe.

It boils down to them not wanting me to use the school as a way to raise funds via 3rd party without their protocol being utilized first. Without getting into the weeds, because a few people have abused the system in the past, we all suffer. Its ridiculous and one of the reasons I got out of coaching. We would raise money for our sports teams, not tax funds mind you, charity funds! And our board office would treat those funds like tax money and tell us how to spend it. Ive considered allowing people to donate to me and give reciepts, but they would get ticked about that.

If you have a PTA/PTO group, could they raise money specifically for your trip without board meddling, or is that how you raised the money for your sports teams? What about a service club like Rotary? They sponsored the academic team at my high school (50 years ago; I don't know about now or if the school still has a team).
