Female Reenactors

Hello,

I am attempting to find a Union reenacting unit that allows females to pursue a military impression. I have been reenacting with the same Pennsylvania unit for seven years, but they are becoming increasingly "family-oriented", and I would like to pursue a serious military impression.
Does anyone have any idea of a serious unit that allows female soldiers? I have contacted many units, and am always turned away due to my gender.
Thank you for any advice or information you may have.

Welcome aboard. We have many members in Pennsylvania -- it might help to indicate what part of Pennsylvania you live in. Doesn't have to be exact, just the area in which you are willing to travel to find a group.

http://www.geocities.com/womansoldier/ you may already be aware of this site, if not you have to take a look at it. There is outstanding info and good people there.

Good Luck.

Years ago I saw a "mess" of a couple ladies (I believe there were three) it wasn't until I left the event that I discovered they were women. They disguised their sex completely and well. Their gear & persona was good enough to fully take me and all the others gents in. In short it can be done and done right, but it isn't easy and probably shouldn't be. More often I have seen it poorly accomplished, almost embarrisingly so.

As an example my unit has a single galtroop, she does a SUPERB job. Erin has the right attitude and is willing to put the extra effort forward. During one of our last presentations I overheard two 6th graders Boy: "Is that a girl?" Girl next to him: "No dummy, just a cute guy." A few minutes later I asked if there was anything odd about my copain? The only query of "He's a girl?" came from that young boy. My indignant reply was "Hey now! That isn't what I meant. Them's fighting words. Whoop him Emmanuel!" Then we jumped feet first into a short explanation about whether or not women served in uniform. Yes, between 400-700, a very small percentage. I then asked Erin why Emmanuel joined up and why "he" thought a woman would be willing to hang out w/ smelly, skanky, vile men on the march... "They'd have to be nuts!" In short at the end of the presentation most of the students still weren't all that sure.
