The civil war journal and letters of the Henry family
The journal of Cornelia Henry covering the years from 1860 - 1868. From what was percieved as good times, through the effects of the war and on through the aftermath.
The Henry family were a slave owning family who operated a grist mill, a saw mill, a hotel for a while, then later on a boarding house. They also operated a post office. William Henry was a Captain in the local home guard and was also a justice of the peace.
Very interesting read, especially for me as they lived about 15 miles from where I was raised in NC.
It is a diary of daily life, so there is a lot more talk of sewing and cooking and weather reports than I would like, but plenty enough about the war and the local influence it had on the people of western NC to keep it interesting.
Knowing and being familiar with all the places and most of the peoples last names added to my enjoyment greatly, also my last name was mentioned once in the book as being a visitor, so naturally now I'm on a quest to find that connection.
A very enjoyable read for anyone that might be interested.
