Hey All, I've been working on our "little" Picacho Peak CW Memorial and have had monuments on my mind. Of course we will never be able to compete with the truly inspiring Civil War memorials back east, but we give it a good effort out here.
I haven't been able to visit as many of the monuments of the Big Battlefields that I have wanted to, but of the ones I have viewed I really liked these monuments: To me, they really bring out the realism that accompanies warfare. So, what are some of your favs?

I haven't seen many. The Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument is the largest I've seen. Impressive, but I don't think my favorite. But I'm glad this thread popped back up because I was thinking about it just the other day. My cousin sent me these photos which he took of the Confederate monument in St. Louis. He gave me permission to post them here. I don't think this is my favorite, either, but the inscription is terrific. I think most of this sentiment could apply to soldiers of either side all over the country.

24th Michigan secondary marker on Culp's Hill. It isn't a grand, huge, spectacular monument, but it's the words on the face that gives it's true value.

Bill, there is a Lion of Lucerne monument in the Confederate cemetery at Higginsville, Missouri. I almost listed it here.

I missed this cemetery on my way to Lexington, Missouri last year. I will try to visit it in October.
