NF Favorite Book on Franklin

Non-Fiction
One of the best shorter books is William Lee White's 'Let Us Die Like Men; The Battle of Franklin, November 30, 1864' from the Emerging Civil War series. Wiley Sword's 'The Confederacy's Last Hurrah' is a pretty good narrative, but Sword's treatment of Hood is extremely one-sided. To me, the gold standard for Franklin books is Eric Jacobson 'For Cause and For Country - A Study of the Affair at Spring Hill and the Battle of Franklin'

Agree on Jacobson as the best.

I love Jacobsons work with the Battle of Franklin Trust.

Looking to read up on Franklin more. Looking for anythign with a lot of details on the personalities/lives of those involved on both sides.

If you want a concise, yet comprehensive, introductory book on the battle and its personalities, I would suggest:

Five Tragic Hours - The Battle of Franklin (217 pages) by James Lee McDonough and Thomas L. Connelly

I regard the outstanding work on Franklin and its participants, on most measures, is:

For Cause & For Country - A Study of the Affair at Spring Hill and the Battle of Franklin (496 pages) by Eric A. Jacobson, co-author Richard A. Rupp

This is one of the best written historical narratives I have read on any battle in the Civil War. It is very well researched, highly informative and engrossing to read. I thoroughly recommend this title.

I agree with For Cause & For Country - A Study of the Affair at Spring Hill and the Battle of Franklin being a must read BUT Sword is an old favorite of mine and he is really good at providing background and good description of the battle. I am not a fan of Hood so I agree with Wiley.

Agree that Wiley Sword's book, 'The Confederacy's Last Hurrah: Spring Hill, Franklin & Nashville' (500 pages) is excellently written and engaging reading too. It also provides the extra coverage of Nashville, post Franklin.

However, in my view, Eric Jacobson's very well researched and comprehensive work on Franklin is the most detailed, readable and authoritative account of the events at Franklin.

I would also mention that Sword's book is about 15 years older than"For Cause.." so more info always comes to light

David

Eric Jacobson has also presented many excellent Youtube videos over the years about Franklin. His detailed knowledge of this subject, as well as his passion and commitment for it, is clearly evident. I would strongly recommend anyone interested in this battle to also view his presentations.

That is the one I am reading next before visiting Franklin on the battle anniversary this year.
