This glimpse into a historic tragedy showcases a well known problem with casting large gun tubes. The problem was with the disparate cooling rate between the outside of the tube versus the interior cooling rate. Because the outside cooled faster than the inside cracks formed within the tube. Many of these large caliber tubes failed upon proofing. Others failed in service, as shown in the historic news article in the primary post.

Plus cast iron has very little strength in tension, great strength in compression. in good castings.
