Is anyone familiar with the story of the Boone Highway Trail Markers? News to me.
A fellow with a high regard for Daniel Boone - name of Joseph Hampton Rich, out Mocksville, NC- took on the epic task of commemorating Boone, by mounting markers to his memory, across the country.
He did this from 1913 to 1938- placing 358 markers/ plaques. Additionally, at least some of these were fabricated from the reclaimed steel of the USS Maine.
These markers were not placed in just areas that Daniel Boone visited. They were placed throughout the lower 48- from Virginia Beach to Massachusetts to San Francisco. Anywhere that Rich could raise money to commemorate his hero.
Found the below web archive, which indicates that a few years ago, there was some interest in locating/ documenting all of the markers. As of 2006, 280 markers were still unaccounted for?
Just a really cool story- wish I knew more. Any help? Has anyone seen these?
