Fallen Soldier: Memoir Of A Civil War Casualty isn't the story of glorious battlefield charges or of great events out of which were forged a renewed nation. Fallen Solider is the story of Private Andrew Roy (born 1834, N Lancashire Scotland) in his own words. A single soldier and his life after a bullet nearly killed him. Roy, a young solider who fought for Pennsylvania (10th PA Reserve Infantry/Co F 39th PA Volunteers) and the Union in the Civil War, was horribly wounded in the groin at the enormous Battle of Gaines' Mill near Richmond, Virginia, in 1862. Roy spent 16 days on the battlefield with scarcely any medical treatment beyond what other wounded men could give him. A Confederate doctor saw the severity of Roy's wounds, told him he would be dead in three days, and quickly moved on to another patient. But Andrew Roy refused to die. Despite his daily battles with trauma, pain, maggots, exposure to the weather, and the ever-0present danger of infection, the philosophical Roy bore up persistently, providing us with insight into the importance of the will to live. Roy describes what it is like to be left for dead on the battlefield, fall ill in an enemy prison, and be discharged from the army, cast off to fend for himself with a wound that refused to heal and prevented him from working. He also relates his experiences undergoing crude surgical operations without anesthesia in an age before bacteriology. Orthopedic surgeon Clyde B. Kernek provides a medical commentary on Roy's wounds and gives context to medical treatments of the Civil War Era. Fallen Soldier is "must" reading for anyone studying the Civil War. -- Midwest Book Review https://www.amazon.com/dp/188021640X/?tag=civilwartalkc-20
