Hi,

I was doing a little casual research into the 29th Missouri Infantry (Union) the other day. I had about 6-7 ancestors that were assigned to this regiment and am naturally curious about their duties. I came across the Order of Battle for the Battle of Bentonville and the assignment for the regiment was "Unassigned" "29 Missouri (Mounted)". Could someone please explain what their duties in battle would be versus a regiment that was assigned to a specific brigade?

Thanks!
Tom

The Regiment was not assigned to a specific Brigade, often a result of reorganization. In such a case the Colonel or commanding officer of the Regiment would report directly to a Division or even corps commander.
