Trostle Escape 14 x 20b2.jpg

Only one cannon of Bigelow's 9th Massachusetts Battery was able to escape from their position across the lane from the Trostle house and barn. The 21st Mississippi overran the remaining elements of the Battery though the sacrifice allowed Union artillery to regroup.

Another amazing work of art, Dennis. You bring to life these critical moments in time many of us have imagined many times. I would love to share this with some Gettysburg FB groups after your approval. The story of Bigelow's Battery has become a very popular subject in the past few years. BTW, what do you call this type of art, a diorama, or what. Never was sure about that. Thanks for sharing your well researched project-extremely cool!

Thanks to those who commented here. Here is a revised version of this print including the overturned cannon in the gate. From my description on my web site. "Now caught in a crossfire and jammed tight to the corner Bigelow ordered the 2 guns of Lt. Richard Milton's left section to escape. The first headed for the only opening in the wall at the farm gate and promptly overturned. The second gun desperately looked for a way out and some stones were removed from the top of the east wall. Bugler Charles Reed described what happened next as the driver headed straight for the wall. "horses jumping and the gun...going over with a tilt on one side and then a crash of rocks and wheels" Milton righted the other gun in a "shower of bullets."
