Equestrian Casualties at Gettysburg

Mark Adkin's, The Gettysburg Companion, estimated that 4,400 horses (from both armies) were killed. Catherine Trostle, whose farm is on United States Avenue, filed a loss claim after the battle, stating there were 100 dead animals on her farm, which may not have included the 16 dead horses near her house (the latter mainly from the 9th Massachusetts battery).
