I've been doing family research for about 25-30 years and found that there seems to be a common thread that we all share. Unfortunately, I've never taken the time to truly do "actual" research until recently; still very much an amateur (at best). Yes, I pretty much know the basics, but limited in knowing and having the experience of where to look, along with the confidence to do so. This is the first forum I've ever participated in and extremely impressed by everyone's response. Can't thank everyone enough. I do have a number of local obituaries for him, but haven't found anything more than what's been mentioned thus far. The Sgt. Egbert Chauncy Corwin was of the same immigrant (Matthias Corwin) family as my line. Curiously his wife was also a Corwin and the g-granddaughter of Henry Corwin, militiaman during the Rev. War and my direct ancestor also. I have 10 George W. Corwin's in my database. but uncertain as to if he is one of them or not. I've inquired a number of times about GAR records, but never could seem to find any sort of list. I'm pretty sure that I inquired with the Suffolk County Historian several years ago, but without success. Any idea where these might be stored? I will look in Fold3 next. Incidentally, I am a native Long Islander (Port Jefferson, Suffolk County). Accordingly, most of my ancestry are all "East Enders" and most descendants of the original settlers. If I can offer any assistance in return, please do not hesitate to ask. As a side note, my g-g-grandfather on my Dad's side was killed at Fair Oaks (81st Infantry, Co.B, 2nd Div.), 31 May 1862, he was a Scottish immigrant, through Canada, and lived in Oswego, NY. Not sure where he is buried. I will definitely keep Bob in mind as we dig into all of this more deeply. Thank you all.
