Emil Schalk

Anyone familiar with Emil Schalk, a German-born author and military theorist who published about the American Civil War during the war itself? If so, what do you make of him and works? He seems a bit of a mysterious character.

I don't think I had ever heard of him before Carol Reardon's With a Sword in One Hand and Jomini in the Other: The Problem of Military Thought in the Civil War North.
