Elida should be in the " Our Army Nurses " thread- it's from the LOC book of that name I've created a thread on. On reviewing Elida's story it occurred to me that some of these women deserve their own moment in Time. Writings of the day are frequently romanticized, at one point dismissive of the home where African Americans have taken refuge- lots to get around there, ouch. As with so many nurses, Elida did what she did- when she could have stayed home. I'm not being critical of those who stayed home, am pointing out that our nurses had some inner drive pinning them in place. As always when reading these stories, think " Could I have gone? Would I have stayed? " Hm. Believe it or not, think so. Honest.

You're welcome! I've dropped the ball on our nurses, need to keep them highlighted again. SO many running threads, well, it's because so many, many people of the era demand our attention by virtue of having been there with all their heart and soul. Once in awhile you get lucky and some kind, industrious soul has done your work for you as with this book.
