My hubby and I are taking a road trip to Boston in early June! I know that may sound crazy to some folks, but we really do enjoy traveling by car when feasible. We like being able to stop along the way. Our first stop will be Harrisburg, PA. Is the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg worth a visit? I searched through the threads in this forum and didn't see much about it. Their website looks good, but I'm hoping some of my CWT friends will have some firsthand knowledge.

Enjoy your trip and both of you be safe. I think you will find many other wonderful stops along the way as well.

Respectfully,
William

Get in touch with member @pamc153PA as she lives in the area and should be able to help you.enjoy your trip.

In Boston, be sure to take the boat out to Fort Warren, on George's Island: you can see Alex Stephens' cell, and maybe meet "The Lady in Black!"

Also note Pat Young's photo tour of period sites in Boston:

Of course, the real history to see there is along the Freedom Trail -- where it all began.

Be sure to read up on the trolley tours. We did a 2 day purchase that gave us unlimited travel around town. That was in 2011 but I am sure they have something similar now.

I remember leaving our rental car parked at the motel those 2 days and hopping a shuttle downtown to catch the trolley. Parking is scarce and expensive.

Have fun.

Boston in June, crazy? Nah, Vicksburg, Mississippi, in June is crazy! So I'm afraid @Jackson'sArm and I have got you beat in the insanity department....
I have not been to Harrisburg, but I have heard that that museum is fabulous. Definitely planning to go there either before or after September to Remember weekend.

Not at all crazy, when you want to stop and enjoy places along the way.
Sadly, I never heard of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg! Let us know if it is worthwhile....
Enjoy your trip: lots to see.

I live less than 2 hours from Harrisburg. I was at the museum when it first opened about 10 years ago. I thought it was pretty good and definitely worth the visit. Do it!

I'm sold on it! @Southern Unionist is onboard too. Of course, I'm onboard to visit the Strasburg Railroad on the way back home. We will both enjoy both, but I love visiting Civil War museums and he loves trains. What can I say? After 30 years of marriage, you learn to appreciate each other's interests and enjoy them too.

Strasburg is fantastic and the Pa. Railroad Museum across the street is great too. I'm a train buff too so I always try to stop there when I'm in that area.

Thank you! For some reason, a lot of our friends hate road trips. We don't have a fear of flying (we have flown plenty), but it's nice to be able to take your time, pack all you want (okay all I want) and stop wherever you want along the way. Of course, we know we are fortunate to have the time to do this. Before we both retired, we were always on a schedule.

It's freedom. :)
