Seriously, why do we let this guy act as some sort of self-appointed "expert" on Civil War history?

Did anybody see the "Anti-Confederate Flag" he made? His views reflect of something born from a convoluted conspiracy theory.

I would appreciate it very much if you took some of Mr. Sebesta's writings and debunked them in this thread. Everybody's got an opinion, which is good, but a real debunking needs some evidence. If you don't, then that is the reason he is some sort of self-appointed "expert" on Civil War history.

I'd hate to sew his flag.

One of Sebesta favorites is his belief that the Museum of the Confederacy is a front for neo-Confederate ideals. The guy sees neo-Confederates behind every rock and routinely crosses the line into modern day politics, equating the Republican Party with them. I think I read once that James McPherson agrees with him, which is not surprising.

Everybody bashes the Museum of the Confederacy.
Lots of folks wonder about the Republican Party and the neo-Confederates.
I am sure that James McPherson agrees that apple pies and moms are nice.

Sounds normal to me. Anyone got a quote or something to critique?

I don't believe everybody bashes the MOC. Lots of folks wonder about the President's birth certificate. Does that sound normal to you?

You are correct neither S. Waite Rawls III nor Ken Burns bash it, nor do I for that matter.
Michael Givens does.

Keep the conversation to civil war related items. Obama's birth certificate is not.

I didn't mean to get political, I was responding to you comment about Republicans and neo-Confederates. I admittedly don't know a lot about Ed Sebesta but the little I do show him to be a Don Quixote type dude who is every bit political and tries very hard to connect Southerners who don't vote the way he does to a neo-Confederate movement. It's ridiculous.

Apropos to Ed Sebesta, it may be well to remember the adage to never interrupt an adversary while he is making a fool of himself.

Who, exactly, is the "we" who "lets" him do this?

He's grandstanding, shrill, and his own worst enemy. He doesn't have a lot of mainstream credibility, but loud people will get attention. That's just how it goes.

Well, for starters as he and Loewen did that "5 myths about the Civil War" thing a few years ago, going so far as to oversimplify the Cornerstone Speech (although that speech spoke of more than slavery).

That and he gives complete idiots the excuse to compare them to Nazis, I see it on different forums every now and then.

Ed Sebesta, wing nut par excellence, once accused Bill Clinton and George W Bush of being Neo-Confederates. It seems, in Ed's mind, that Clinton's and Bush's high crimes and treason had something to do with saying something nice to the UDC while they were governors.

Excuse my French, but that is one Hell of a stretch to call ol' Slick Willie a Neo-Confederate, barring he was a poor redneck boy from Arkansas.

I don't know about Ed Sebesta other than books he has written. Takes all kinds in this world.

I can envision getting a bad case of vertigo from looking at it too long. :frown:

"We are all one now," said John A. Gilmer, a staunch Unionist, to George Howard, equally staunch Secessionist,
when they heard the news of the firing on Sumter and Lincoln's call for troops. After the adoption of the [North Carolina] Ordinance of Secession "

A simple google get lots of things he has done.
If a fellow thinks Ed Sebesta needs to be criticized, looks like there is plenty of material to get beyond simple opinion.

What this self style Neo-Confederate expert apparently doesn't realize is that "shore nuff" dye in the wool Neo-Confederates despise the Republican Party every much as they do the Democrats.

What I disagree with Sebesta on, is that while his documentation of Confederate documents have merit. What throws me off on him is that anybody who disagrees with him is a "Neo-Confederate". That the SCV and UDC are borderline hate-groups and that we should make Cinco de Mayo an "Anti-Confederate Holiday" (check his facebook page).

Things like this make me miss writers like Shelby Foote in Civil War study.

What do you bet that his extreme positions brings the green his way?
Possibly the attention stokes his ego. Who knows.

Foote wrote a few more and longer books and did not need the extra stroking.
