Edwin Stanton was one of Lincoln's most formidable war lords. But he apparently drew the line at having his own son Eddie serve in the military. I can't find much info about Eddie on line so I wondered what CWT folk knew about the young man?

His obituary from the 30 Aug 1877 edition of the Philadelphia Inquirer gives a few details. Find A Grave includes a photo of him as a boy.

After reading the OP, it immediately reminded me of one description made of this conflict as a 'rich man's war and a poor man's fight'.

But after reading the posted obituary, it's mentioned, ...'For some time previous to his death he had been in poor health.'...

Also, according to the gravestone details, he died relatively young, aged 35 years.

Putting two and two together, it seems that that he may have been a sickly individual. This might explain why his father resisted exposing him to the rigors of military service during wartime conditions. Could it be here that Stanton senior didn't think his son had the physical constitution to cope with the vigors of combat.

Actually he wasn't a junior. His middle name was Lamson (his mother's maiden name) and his Dad's middle name was McMasters. He was only about 35 when he died in 1877. But he did give Edwin 2 grandkids .
Here is some information on one of the grandkids.

William Marvel's Stanton biography Lincoln's Autocrat mentions Eddie in a number of different places. According to Marvel, Eddie asked his father to secure an officers' commission for him, but the father refused. The Secretary of War would later hire his son to work in his own office, so Eddie was doing war work, although not in uniform.
