As I've mentioned, I'm a member of New England HistGen which publishes a weekly online newsletter. Today's "edition" includes a referral to the online indices that are available through the Durham County Library: https://durhamcountylibrary.org/ncc...188&utm_content=409212186&utm_source=hs_email These records include an index to obituaries (1848-1927) and an index to births, marriages and divorces (1800's-1911). The actual documents are available on microfilm through the library.

Durham County wasn't created until 1881 from parts of Wake and Orange Counties, so you may need to check those places as well if you are doing research for the Durham area.
