Dunker Church

I was at Antietam on a rainy Saturday morning in October. I got caught in a downpour and spent 20 minutes, or so, sitting in the church. Really a powerful experience.
I felt the same when I visited the Confederate Chapel at Higginsville, Missouri. It wasn't raining or anything, but you couldn't help but be moved by the serenity and your imagination seeing the ol' fellas in their uniforms mingling and sitting in the pews. It truly was breathtaking.

That church has some strange optical illusion for me. It doesn't look half as big on the outside as it does inside.
I think it is more of a meeting house than church. IMO. I can stand in there and visualize the elders patrolling with a rod, a feather on one end and a brass ball on the other for those who may not be awake! 😄

Painting of Colonel Stephen D. Lee at Sharpsburg.
Colonel Lee was in command of a "brigade" of artillery which was placed next to the Dunker Church.

GenSDLee.jpg

This painting hung in the Lee Hall at Mississippi State University when I attended college in early 1970's.
Four of these large paintings were taken down. The only one that has resurfaced is one of General Forrest that is at Lee's home in Columbus, MS.
I cropped the image but I thought the Dunker Church was in the background.
