By the end of the war with so much relying on defensive works, is might be "digging, always digging".
 
It has been my experience that soldiers think everything is hard work. Complaining is just what soldiers do. If you give a soldier a cold can of beer, they will complain the pulling the top top is "hard work" and someone should open it for them.
