At the start of the Civil War, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker went to Washington D.C. to enlist in the Union Army as a medical officer. As a woman she was denied the opportunity, but volunteered nonetheless, working near the front lines at Fredericksburg and the battles that today make up Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park. Walker would gain her commissions in 1863 as the first female surgeon in the U.S. Army. Following the war, she was awarded the Medal of Honor, the first, and inexplicably still only, woman to to be given this highest honor. #FindYourPark #WomensHistoryMonth

You might be interested in this recent book: Dr. Mary Walker's Civil War: One Woman's Journey to the Medal of Honor and the Fight for Women's Rights by Theresa Kaminski. The author spoke to my Round Table awhile back. Dr. Walker was one determined lady who didn't put up with much foolishness. The government may have revoked her Medal of Honor, but that didn't mean that Dr. Walker gave it back. As I recall, she was buried with it.

I want the Civil War Lego's actually! Those are cool and very clever to get children interested and involved!

They are on Amazon and there are other companies incorporating Lego pieces into these sets. There are Revolutionary War, WW1, WWII, etc.

Yes! I need to look into that Legos set. It's definitely one the Kids Room doesn't have. But then, they dump all of their sets together for "Legos Build Night", so you'd probably end up with General Lee either riding a T Rex or the Millennium Falcon.

I am way , way past the age for Legos but was shocked about how expensive they can be. Lots of adults build them too.

They do get pricey. They just filed for bankruptcy if remember correctly. Maybe this will become their forte.

There's supposed to be a new Lego facility being built in the county as I post this. Maybe there can be a photo contest for the best Civil War vignettes or maybe someone can create a graphic biography of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker using Legos. (There's the subtle correction back to a discussion about Dr. Walker.)

Like a lot of the male doctors of the time have anything to say about hygiene, handwashing or picking/scratching.
