Dr. Alexander Lucius DeLaVergne, my great great grandfather, served as a hospital steward during the Civil War. The portrait of him was cropped from a colorized photo taken about 1900. His Civil War 'Descriptive Roll & Account of Pay' document is attached in two parts. I have other historical details about him and his wife and family, if anyone is interested (family heirloom items: prewar autobiography, covered wagon chest, Bible, his wife's chair).
The story I heard was that a Union soldier, James 'Jimmy' Moore, was hit in the leg with a cannonball, and was brought to Dr. DeLaVergne's field hospital, where the leg was amputated to healthy tissue (I have a photo of James, without the leg, somewhere). Molly Moore, James' sister, came to help with James' recovery, and Molly & Alexander were married in Indiana (Sep 23, 1863, Newton, Vermillion, Indiana), after which they returned to the field hospital for the remainder of the war.
