Douglas, a man who understood political realities when he saw them, realized that his sponsorship of the Kansas-Nebraska Act had made him very unpopular among a sizable portion of the North's population.

The Little Giant once quipped that, after the passage of that piece of legislation, he could have made his way from Boston to Chicago "by the light of my own effigies."
