Does statue benefit, reflect the people?

I drive past the Madison County Courthouse on my commute to work nearly every day. And for the past six years I haven't given much thought to the Confederate statue on the courthouse lawn.
However, the recent repairs made to the monument naturally draw the attention of passersby. And, for some, the renovation of the monument may spark questions.
Should fallen Confederate soldiers garner more respect than United States veterans from Tennessee who paid the ultimate sacrifice over the last 60 years?
Weathering and deterioration of the 126-year-old Confederate statue may have provided our local leaders with the opportunity to provide a memorial that more accurately depicts our community's respect for all Tennessee veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
