For those of you who do not know: I have been doing a lot of research on the Confederate Army of Tennessee during the late war period, and am looking into leads. One of these was a link to a now defunct site available via the Wayback Machine, blueandgraymarching.com. However, several links to certain articles of interest for me are completely dead. I am hoping that the site owner still has the information in his possession. Thus it has become a matter of identifying & opening communications with the former site owner.

Looking at the bottom of the page gave me a name: James M. Schruefer. He was apparently the site owner and sole contributor from all I can see. Looking up the name I've found two links. One was to a Masters thesis paper by a "James M. Schruefer" from James Madison University back in 2016, entitled "Good Union people: Enduring bonds between black and white Unionists in the Civil War and beyond". The other was a contact page for "James Schruefer", a Ph.D. Student in the University of Maryland Department of History.

I have attempted to make contact through the latter source, sending two emails & calling the cell number twice, but no response. It was only about now, weeks later, I realized a discrepancy, which you might have noticed: If he had his Masters Thesis published to James Madison University's site back in 2016, why is he listed as a student of history at the University of Maryland? Are they two different James Schreufers? Did he originally attend University of Maryland before switching to JMU, and the university kept his student information up?

I also took note of the original website. He had his copyright back in 2011. The website is dead by October 1st of 2016, though due to all the seperate pages having their own captures, I can't determine the last date of availability. If he's the same James M. who did that thesis for JMU, he stopped using the site after he got his masters. Why, considering all the excellently written articles of his on the site (especially his compiling of inspection reports & his article on the blue uniforms of Longstreet's Corps during the East Tennessee Campaign), would he drop the website and not make more contributions? I presume domain costs would be the main issue.

Whatever the case, I'll get to the point of this: Does anyone here know who James M. Schruefer is, or how to contact him? Any information is great information.

I believe he was 5'5", tho I'm not sure where I got that height. It must've been a recent post here that drew much attention to him at the Battle of Tullahoma and onward? Stands to reason that such a small load would make for a faster more nimble horse and a small target and thus allow him to survive that much more action? I imagine that while West Point had a height min, the cavalry likely had a height AND weight maximum, no?

Uhm...I think you are posting in the wrong question

I'd contact the alumni office of James Madison University. If it is like a lot of other IHL alumni offices, it won't give you the information BUT will notify him and give him your contact info.

It would be possible for the same person to have taken a masters degree at James Madison and then gone on the the University of Maryland for a PhD. You might run thorough the same routine (as above) with U.MD.

A newspaper search turned up several with the same surname in Baltimore area. A listing on Ancestry (apt to be several years old) shows him in Takoma Park, MD (this is a suburb--if not a part of--Maryland).

Jim Schruefer is also shown as working in civil war films, like Wicked Spring, and Field of Lost Shoes, etc.
IMDB: James Schruefer

In Wicked Spring, he was "Harrison's friend, Jim..."

Wicked Spring was made by Kevin Hershberger, who started Lionheart Filmworks. Mr. Hershberger was the costume designer for Field of Lost Shoes, in which Mr. Schruefer was engaged in the Special effects department of that production.

Ergo, perhaps contacting Mr. Hershberger/Lionheart filmworks will produce the contact information you desire.
