DOES ANYONE KNOW THIS U.S. SHIP

This ship supposedly was in the Mississippi fleet. This photo was at Baileys dam on the red river in Alexandria Louisiana. On some sites it says that it's the Uss Signal but the Signal was the number 8 and this is the number 9.
Just wondering if anyone knows or can help me to find out.

The National Park Service confirms the identification. Handwritten on the back of the mount, in ink is "1863" and "USS Forest Rose Pineville opposite Alexandria, La."

Yes JPK I'm trying to get photos of all the ships that were in this area bc I live here on the red river. I have found so many things metal detecting from the battle here where they sunk the Covington, Signal, transport John Warner and also the City belle. I have proof of the area they were and it's not where the books and my research said it happen. I've been researching and detecting for years on this so I may have to just write about this. The 30 lb parrot shell on my avatar I found came off the Signal probably shorty before it was done in for.

I don't know how much u know about Ft Derussy. I live a couple miles from it, the state has retain the ft but hasn't done anything worn with for 20 yrs. it's locked up but a group we have talked with the state and gave us permission to clean it up. I have been doing that a couple years now and have it look great. It's still closed to the public but when u come down I could surely show u around there if u would like.

I absolutely would like that. The Annual Jefferson Civil War Symposium is in August every year in Jefferson, Texas. We had a speaker there last year whose topic was Fort DeRussy. It was great.

Yessir. Not planning to leave CWT so you know where to find me. Each time I travel into Louisiana for Civil War touring,I check the links I have for anything new on Fort DeRussy. I knew everything being done there was mostly by private individuals/entities and I'm thankful for that. I fear for the future of Lousiana's Civil War State Historic Sites. Been to Mansfield,Port Hudson and Forts Randolph/Buhlow numerous times and know their budgetary issues.

Yes sir very true they cut back the parks every year. I've been cutting trees. Bushes and keeping the grass cut at derussy myself on my own dime but it's worth it. I'll send u a few pictures of the work I'm doing

I have seen the image quite a few times, but it is good to know the designation of the ship. She was built in 1862 and commissioned in December 1862. She carried four 24Pdrs. and two 32 Pdrs. She was part of the Mississippi Squadron and supported the Army of the Mississippi. At the end of the war she ended carrying ordinance and supplies from New Orleans to Jefferson City, Mo. She decommissioned at Mound City, Illinois on August 7, 1865 and sold on August 17, 1865. Operations she had taken part in were Fort Hindman, Yazoo Pass Expedition, Vicksburg and the Red River Expedition. She also took part in smaller actions. After the sale she was renamed the Anna White. She was destroyed by ice at St/ Louis in February 1868.

Thanks for the information. It just amazes me so many of these ships passed on the river near my house. I just love this history

Tinclad No. 9 was the USS Forest Rose, see Silverstone, Civil War Navies 1855-1883 (2001), p 129.

Most of the CDV's from there have "McPherson and Oliver Photogrophers" on the back. They were based in New Orleans.
