There is a documentary on YouTube " Quantrill' Raider's in the series " In search of History"
Several historians comment on Quantrill including Edward Leslie who wrote a biography of Quantrill " The Devil knows how to ride.
Hopefully someone can post a link to it.

Thank you Cavalry Charger. I'm too busy to read a book on Quantrill right now. Talk about releasing the inner beast. From mild manner school teacher to butcher.

Ride with the Devil was basically a Western disguised as a Civil War movie especially since the latter was influential.
Ride with the Devil is a non fiction book. The movie has nothing to do with the movie of the same title other then they both cover the same historical era.

"Ride With The Devil" the movie, was based on the book, "Woe to Live On" by Daniel Woodrell. The movie follows the book pretty closely.

Lefty, I think you mean that "The Devil Knows How to Ride" is a non fiction book. The movie is called "Ride With the Devil." Notice the difference in the titles?

The book is primarily about Quantrill's life, while the movie is about a fictional character who rode with Capt. Bill Anderson.

Tend to agree with Leslie at the end he was probably neither devil/butcher nor a knight errant, but just a complex man in complex times somewhere in the middle of the two

Whoops. Thanks for the correction.

Noted you disagree with probably the most noted biographer of him, hardly surprising anymore
Your absolutely right. Honest people recruit others to liberate slaves then tell the slave owner to set up an ambush. Honest people gladly kill US soldiers. Honest people Rob rape and murder those who support the Union.
We should all teach our children to be has honest as William Clarke Quantrill.
