"Dixie" on the river

Love that calliope!
Theres always been something cool when your in a rivertown and had no idea they were there, and hearing one of the big boats announcing its arrival or departure with music
Indeed - that's one especially fond memory I have of my two short cruises on the famous Delta Queen back in the early 1980's!

I've only heard a calliope once in my life, and it was on an excursion boat. Missouri Rive, though. We don't get a lot of excursion boats in Boonville, but we sure used to have a lot of barge tows.

Do they still play Dixie on those boats?
I would imagine, but haven't done a long cruise for quite some time.

I would hope so, least to me it's part of the culture and history of riverboats. Think most will let passengers play the calliope, but wouldn't do me any good :bounce:

I've always liked the sound of a calliope. When I was a kid in Louisville the Delta Queen and the Belle of Louisville would race (they closed the river) at Derby time. My dad knew the captain of the Belle so we once got to ride on it and they had a calliope. Way cool.

And I hope the PC police haven't ended the playing of Dixie.

Its like anything, when its there, you take it for granted, like the river itself. I probally go to Hannibal or Quincy least twice a week. But we went through a period awhile back when the Mississippi Queen company went of business, and there were no real riverboats on the river at all. So makes me least appreciate them coming back, theres a resurgence of new boats being built again now. Seeing a boat outside the town almost transports you back in time.

It reminds me of all the carousels that I and my kids have been on. I have never ridden a steam boat so can't compare them
Regards
David

Always brings chills no matter what its played on.
