I've mellowed over the years posting on CWT, as evidenced by a growing number of "likes" and fewer and fewer "quotes" debating my opinions.
In that light, I thought I would assert an idea that is bound to incite some vigorous opposition:
I see a connection between the terrorists who shot up the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris and the fire eating secessionists of the Old South. First, both come from an honor culture which absolutely does not tolerate any perceived insult. Second, both have a propensity towards violence. Insults must be answered with death whether it is beating Senator Sumner to with a cane, dueling at sunrise, burning down an abolitionist press, or murdering journalists in cold blood. And lastly, neither is capable of living peacefully with those who disapprove of their beliefs and way of life. The secessionists were battling the forces of modernity, as are the terrorists today.
IMHO the motivations of the terrorists are primarily political rather than religious. They are of course much less rational actors than our old Confederates, nevertheless, there are interesting parallels.
Have at me!
