For lunch I took my wife to an all you can eat pizza buffet. I had a couple slices of dill pickle pizza. My wife hates dill pickles and made a dusting face while I ate the dill pickle pizza slices. This made me wonder about dill pickles and the Civil War.

I take it that both dill and sweet pickles were eaten during the Civil War. There probably were other styles of pickles as well. Do we know if Civil War era people preferred dill or sweet pickles? I know other things besides cucumbers were pickled as well.

I think sweet pickles were the preference south of the Mason Dixon line just because all of the people who make homemade pickles I know have a recipe passed down through the generations for sweet pickles. I love cucumbers and pickles of just about any kind or recipe and I'll have to say it's hard to eat a hamburger without a dill pickle. The Mt. Olive Pickle company is just up the road from where my wife grew up and they make some excellent products besides pickles which are their speciality.

My paternal grandfather didn't share my love for cucumbers or pickles. I remember him saying that if a hog wouldn't eat cucumbers he wouldn't either.
