Thank you for posting this. Sorry I do not know for sure what it is and I hope someone will jump in with some thoughts. It does look like a Louisiana Cartridge Box Plate. I have seen it said these were originally cast in 1858.

Confederate Belt Buckles & Plates, Expanded Edition by Steve Mullinax p.164 A very similar plate referred to as a "Shoulder Belt Plate." Under 'remarks' says The original die is dated 1858. The Continental Guards continued to wear this style with their traditional uniforms until after 1900. The elite New Orleans unit remained at home during the conflict, however, volunteers from its ranks made up the nucleus of the 5th Louisiana Infantry. Great find! Congratulations.

Does anyone know what the orignal were made up of? The one i found i think is brass front and lead back.
that is typical of plates and buckles of the time, they were filled with lead to give them some weight particularly helpful with cartridge box plates, they were used to keep the flap down if you didn't close it completely on the finial.

All of the ones at Hanover Brass and else where are oval, this one appears to be round and after looking close at the iron loops there should be a whole more rust on them then there is especially in the soil of Louisiana.

If you rotate the photo you can see it was taken "head on" and is in fact oval:

Sure is thanks for turning it around or my old eyes. Now if you could do something about putting more rust on the iron loops:D

According to Kerksis, the plate that you have found is fairly rare in that it is die stamped and then lead filled. Kerksis states in his book " This is the only known specimen noted with solder filling and the two eyes are spaced differently than those of the unfilled plates" p 373 circa 1840 You have wonderful find!
