Many of you probably are familiar with Stephen Woodworth, a terrific historian based here in Texas who specializes in the Civil War era. He has a very interesting site where it appears he posts some writings of some of his students. In the link below, the posts four different reviews of the same book "And the War Came" by Kenneth Stampp which examines why the North went to war to stop secession. It's interesting because each of the reviewers took away somewhat different emphasis.
Which just goes to show, historians can all study and read the same primary documents and come away with very different understandings of what happened. Some say it was all about economics. Some say it was slavery. Some say it was capitalism. One thing is clear, there was no more unanimity among the Northerners at the time about what the war was about as there is among posters on this forum.
