Did the Union have a C&R process?

We know the Confederacy had a C&R system for turn ins and battlefield pickups. Did the Union have the same thing? If so, how did they mark them?

Sorry for my ignorance - C&R?
Cleaning and Repair... The Confederacy developed a system of retreivng weapons from battlefields then sending them to a couple of different facilties in Virgina. They would clean, repair and mark them with a letter in front of the trigger guard usually with A, F, Q, T, or Z.

On 5 August 1862 Secretary Stanton ordered that captured arms which were not suitable for issue to volunteer regiments be repaired and "put in order" by the arsenals for issue to the militia. This is one indication that the Federals had a system for recovering arms, refurbishing them, and issuing them. What I have not seen is anything to indicate that the Federals were marking the refurbished weapons like the Confederates were doing.

Don Dixon

Well, that proves that..... thank you very much!

Not to muddy the waters, but understandably this would have been a new challenge in the South. The U.S. arsenals had however long been involved besides producing new firearms with repair and refurbishing. I own a H.F. Model 1795 type 2 dated 1811 that had been refurbished at Greenleaf's Point (later Washington Arsenal) between 1818-1825. This is know by the cartouche of Eber Ward based on when he was there. It had done it's duty in the War of 1812 then repaired/ refurbished. Next God knows what else, but probable Mexican-American War and even Civil War. See Tim Prince's write up: https://collegehillarsenal.com/prev...el-1795-Type-II-Musket?sort=pd.name&order=ASC
