I ran across this on the web today. http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/cwd/transcripts.html It's a web site where they have posted photographic images of diaries from the Civil War, and it appears that one can volunteer to work on transcribing them into electronic text.
Don't know if it's been posted here before or not, but I thought it was kind of neat, and an opportunity to participate in preserving history in a small way.
