It is near Derby time in Kentucky. The 143rd Kentucky Derby will be held on May 6, 2017 in Louisville, Kentucky. Each year I try to post on foods that are served and their history. It is a time to celebrate with Burgoo, Derby Pie and Mint Juleps, to name a few.

I will bring up older posts on the Derby and food.

For those who enjoy horse racing, this is the most famous event of horse racing in U. S.

Wish I could be there. Kentucky is on my 'bucket list'. At least I might be able to enjoy some of the foods ;) Thanks @donna

I think it is the most famous horse racing event in the whole wide world.

I became a more casual fan of horse racing after visiting Churchill Downs in late May several years ago. The tour & museum center they have there are really a sight to see, and very well done in my opinion. And what made it great was, after a few hours of taking the tour and walking around the museum, they have daily horse races there to place a bet or two on to make it even that much more fun, I highly recommend checking it out.

At this point in the year for these kind of races, I simply hope for good weather & track conditions to minimize any possible injuries to the horses themselves. I never like to see them race after heavy rains in the deep mud to further risk any serious injury, especially with them being such magnificent animals.

Here's a fun little cocktail that's refreshing and sort of a spin on the traditional mint julep. I've had it before and enjoyed it.

Minted Cucumber Cooler

Ingredients -
  • 4 medium cucumbers, ends trimmed
  • 2 limes
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 large sprig mint leaves, picked off the stem
Directions - scroll to the very bottom for instructions

I think I may try this as I really need a pick me up.

My only trip to the Kentucky Derby was in 1973, the year Secretariat won. We were in the infield and saw only about ten seconds of the race until we watched the video tape replay on TV later. We ate sandwiches and beer. No mint julep.

My first time to Derby was in the in field. Couldn't see anything.

The next times had good seats. Of course was older and could afford them. Then you could have mint juleps and see the race.
Isn't that the truth about visibility! We could see just a little bit of the track at around the 1/8 pole. The only horse we saw was Secretariat because of the big lead he had built up.

Found this neat drink online and thought it was aptly appropriate for Derby time. It looks very tasty and pretty at the same time. Queen Elizabeth is a huge race horse fan and owns many thoroughbreds and attends the UK's biggest race, Ascot.

My Dad used to say, "My idea of a mixed drink is to add ice to my Jack Daniels."

I've somehow just spaced out Derby this year (doesn't get much attention out here). I only went once when I lived in Louisville and that was in 1968 when my rich uncle gave my dad two tickets to his company's box and we sat right behind Hubert Humphrey and his secret service guys. We walked to the track which was a loooooong way and dad bought me a mint julep which astounded me as I wasn't of drinking age and he was a stickler for following the law.

A lot of folks in Louisville just had parties but didn't actually go to the race. There used to be a big parade, too, but it was so difficult to find parking and deal with the crowd that few people we knew attended that either.

Gonna have to make up a menu now. Luckily, our mint is up so we could have a couple of juleps in my mother's silver julep cups.

I have no idea why I watch the Kentucky Derby on TV every year, but that I always look forward to it and all the festivities and celebrations that surround the race. Definitely on my bucket list!

Even though I pretty much quit drinking alcohol the first of the year, the Minted Cucumber Cooler and Pink Queen sound like two recipes I need to try out.

Looking forward to those recipes @donna!

It is almost Derby time again. This one will be May 5, 2018. Have to check out new recipes and always bring up old ones.

It is time to have fun and enjoy the races, the horses and the great Kentucky foods.
And hats! I promise I won't post hats in the food forum, but...hats!!

Didn't we have a hat thread? I shall look for it.
