Just thought I would post the latest update on our CS Monument. It was put back up (quietly) a few days ago and it came out great, we are all Happy to see it back. The SCV State Division commander had called me about a month ago wanting to do a big re-dedication thing of which I suggested we just get it back up quietly and then on Confederate Memorial Day 2019 we could do something special. Glad he took my advise. Here are some before, the accident and after photos. The CS Soldier is being repaired and will be put in the museum. All the cannon balls were are so put back:wink:

Congratulations on all of your hard work (much behind the scenes I imagine) to restore the monument. Interesting that the community accepted the return of the monument quietly.

The University of Mississippi is experiencing social protest regarding its Confederate soldier statue from a student organization to have it removed. This is not the first protest but it is the strongest as it has gained some faculty and staff support.

I suspect the administration will receive pressure from the state and the Higher Education Board to move it to the Confederate Cemetery on campus. But it remains to be seen how serious the effort and how much media attention it receives.

Does education begin in the home or in the school? Just wondering aloud, and it will be best if I let the silence answer the thought. Thank you and those with you for the consideration and effort to save our own heritage from utter disgrace.

I understand your opinions and agree that ignorance comes from a lack of education. The discussion about the Confederacy and its soldiers unfortunately is dominated by the issue of slavery and spirals downward.

Incidents such as in Charlottesville and Chapel Hill prevent any helpful discussions about the issues driving the current discourse facing us as a people and a nation.

Decedents of Confederate soldiers attempting to honor and recognize the service of their ancestors are continually besieged by claims of racism. How can any exchange between parties be beneficial if all are shouting and threatening violence? That is the issue we all face and so far not very successfully!

You hit the nail there. People should see other aspects as well.

Thanks for the update

As an Ole Miss Alumnus, I'm really not surprised with this current administration's
decision to continue embrace such views.

But to move statues . . . is denying recent history.
Even the history of the early 20th century . . . when said monuments were erected.
I shall say no more, in order to avoid 'violating' any site rules.

I totally agree! I have strong opinions on this matter, but try to avoid the debate of obvious causes.
But its all history and should not be denied.

I'm so glad you brought this up again, you were telling me and @Drew all about the politics your SCV chapter and Alabama Division were dealing with after that nebulous car accident involving that police officer and the statue.

While doing the research for the City Council about repairs to our soldier I found the original maker of the monument and the soldier. When this monument was first made it was 15k. Just to repair the soldier was 90k. The Alabama State Divisions of the UDC & SCV both offered to pay the cities 5k deductible but the majority of the city council wanted to do away with the monument so the offer was pulled. The State said it had to go back as a CS monument and now we have the current monument which is fine with me as its back as it should be and the soldier will be repaired so in the end we got 2 CS monuments.
