Below are two photos of an inscription on my Model 3 Burnside. I think it is safe to say that it was in Co E and maybe the 6th regiment. I also think the 3rd letter in the 2nd row is a Masonic symbol. The problem is the first two markings in both the 1st and 2nd row. I spent 38 years reading high school essays but these letters seem to go where no man has gone before. The wood grain and the finish are not helping. I am hoping fresh eyes and different perspectives may help solve this. If not it just joins other mysteries like big foot and people who ask stupid questions at meetings. H

Here is my best guess. I think the first letter in the top row is a backwards "N." It kind of looks like a VA connected to each other but I think what you are seeing as the crossbar is actually grain of the wood?

The first letter/symbol in the second row looks like a backwards "3" to me or if the grain is making the top part look like the top of a 3 then it's a backward "J." I dont think its a capital "E" since I assume it would have been formed like the one in the top row? I agree with you on the "IA" I have no idea what the "mountain" symbol is? The last symbol on the second row is definitely a 6.

Lets go at it from another direction. Whats the serial # on the Burnside it might no be an exact match but may help ID the unit.

This Burnside has a SN of 2898 which puts it in the first half of the 3rd model run. These would have most likely delivered to the govt. in 1862 or early 63. I am going to go through the roster of the 6th Oh later today as they did have some Burnsides around that time and the 6th Michigan too. Any help is deeply appreciated and thanks to all who have commented. H

Here are all the serial # starting with 28 there is one that is only 1 number away???????

Maybe LA - Louisiana ?

2nd Illinois cav was in Vicksburg and Red River campaigns, might look for battles it engaged units with similiar names it could have lost it to

Off hand LA units seem more likely then NC

NJ Co E
R NM 6

(New Jersey Co E, Rifle Number 6)

I'm fairly certain this was done with a not particularly sharp nail, and hence the letters came out weird, because the scratches kinda kept skipping. No idea why they are backwards other than that maybe they were written with the aid of a mirror (thus came out backwards). I'm also pretty sure that it's a N on the second line as it looks a lot like the first line's N.

You guys are so completely appreciated. I have had to suspend my search as my daughter in law is in the hospital and there are other minor medical problems I'm suddenly dealing with. All will be well. Its not Covid just life. I did wonder if it was NC, North Carolina, and dealing with a captured Burnside. Saw no marks on the stock to support that. La could be a second source. The not sharp nail makes sense. Had not even thought broadly enough to include NJ. Oh, can't wait to get back to fun. H

When viewing this on the "Home" page the photo jumped at me as an inscription of LA for Louisiana without even knowing what this was about. Based on the information above this must be a federal arm, but none of the State Units listed would seem to result in an inscrpition like what we see. I agree that backwards letters may be the culprit or this arm was later "picked up". Very interesting and I thoroughly enjoy this type of forensic investigation!

***EDIT: Ha my late post, missed the answer! Great work!***

My mother adds the excellent observation that the person doing the carving may well have been a undiagnosed dyslexic... all the right letter, just some of them wrong way round. Probably looked just fine to them!

Sorry to hear about your daughter-in-law and other medical issues. Hope everyone is well again soon!
